Vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol, d-gamma tocopherol)
DO YOU NEED VITAMIN E SUPPLEMENTS? Vitamin E is an “essential” nutrient—one that the body cannot manufacture and thus must obtain from outside sources. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of vitamin E is 30 International Units (IU). Numerous human clinical trials and epidemiological data show that vitamin E levels many times higher than the RDA, on average (400–800 IU per day), may provide significant health benefits.* However, dietary sources of vitamin E cannot typically supply these levels.* It is difficult to ingest enough vitamin E from food alone. Animal sources of vitamin E are poor, and only small amounts occur in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, and liver. Larger, but still moderate, amounts are found in whole-grain products, seeds, nuts, and vegetable oils. In addition, many processing methods (such as heating and chemical refining) reduce the amount of vitamin E in some foods.
Although free radicals are normal by-products of cellular metabolism, their cumulative effects can be devastating. Ideally, antioxidants produced by the body and supplied by the diet would “scavenge” free radicals and destroy them as they are produced. But influences such as an inadequate diet, a stressful lifestyle, and environmental pollution can upset this balance.
For those who want to increase their vitamin E intake and enhance their antioxidant protection, our company has an excellent “full-spectrum” vitamin E formulation product. Our full-spectrum vitamin E supplement is a balanced blend of d-alpha-tocopherol, mixed tocopherols, and mixed tocotrienols.*
VITAMIN E BENEFITS: Vitamin E plays a critical role in the body by protecting LDL cholesterol and cell membranes from oxidation damage.* Vitamin E also helps maintain healthy DNA in the interior of cells. Vitamin E works with other antioxidants to provide optimal health to cells and organs.* Several laboratory and clinical studies have shown the importance of vitamin E in supporting good cardiovascular health and a strong immune system in the elderly.*
TOCOTRIENOLS & TOCOPHEROLS: Our full-spectrum vitamin E contains structurally related mixed tocopherols and tocotrienols, formulated in a base of medium-chain triglycerides and lecithin for maximum bioavailability. Tocotrienols have been shown to be potent antioxidants in themselves, with biological efficacy rivaling or surpassing that of "plain" vitamin E (as d-alpha tocopherol).*
The tocopherols (family of vitamin E antioxidants) in our product are derived from soybeans and the tocotrienols from rice bran oil, providing a natural mixture of vitamin E and vitamin E analogs.* Our unique vitamin E formulation of different tocopherols and tocotrienols provides the entire body with antioxidant protection. Each capsule contains 200 IU of the most biologically active form of vitamin E, and the liquid formulation further enhances the bioavailability of E-Prime.* This can be taken in addition to our basic essential multi-vitamin and mineral complex which contains a daily dose of 400 IU of d-alpha and d-gamma tocopherols.
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin. It helps protect LDL cholesterol, as well as all cell membranes in all organ tissues from oxidative damage. Vitamin E rides along with the triglycerides and cholesterol protecting these structures from oxidative damage. This has been known for years, and medical studies have touted the benefits of vitamin E. Recent studies show that the natural form of vitamin E, that is d-alpha tocopherol and d-gamma tocopherol, delta-tocopherol, and the mixed tocotrienols are what is most effective in maintaining heart health, not the synthetic form of vitamin E.* Most supplement brands provide the dl-alpha-tocopherol, and the results from studies utilizing the synthetic form have been mixed.
Mixed Carotenoids (Beta Carotene)
Our products contain a mixture of carotenoids, providing a broad spectrum of antioxidant protection. Beta carotene (provitamin A) promotes healthy skin, a strong immune system, and helps maintain good vision. Our vitamin/antioxidant complex includes the safe provitamin form of vitamin A, beta carotene, which naturally converts in the body into vitamin A only as needed, giving you the benefits of vitamin A without the risk of liver toxicity.* Furthermore, beta carotene has not been found to be associated with birth defects as high levels of vitamin A has been shown to be.*
As we age, there is a general decline in visual acuity. One of the most important reasons for the loss of visual acuity over time is the damage caused by environmental factors. Our eyes are not sequestered inside the body as are our heart or kidneys. Except when we are asleep, our eyes are constantly exposed to environmental factors such as air pollution, dryness, and oxidative damage from sunlight.
The comprehensive formulation of products is designed to support long-term eye health, especially when combined with preventive measures against exposure of the eyes to harmful environmental influences.*
What we actually “see” with the eye are the patterns of light that strike the retina, a light-sensitive layer of cells at the back of the eye. In the center of the retina is the macula, where the light rays are most highly focused and visual acuity is highest. The macula is especially vulnerable to oxidative damage because it has a high metabolic rate and because the light focused on it enhances the production of free radicals. The central portion of the macula contains a yellow pigment called the macular pigment, which helps protect the sensitive receptors in the macula particularly from the potentially harmful effects of short-wavelength light. Our eyes receive support from the antioxidant carotenoids that exist in the macular pigment—lutein and zeaxanthin.*
While the roles lutein and zeaxanthin play in the physiology of the eye are not completely known, the links between lutein and eye health are so strong that several national and regional health organizations have recommended the increase of dietary lutein. Lutein is believed to function in two ways: first as a filter of high-energy blue light, and second as an antioxidant that quenches light-induced free radicals and reactive oxygen species.*
Zeaxanthin, a yellow carotenoid, is an isomer of lutein. In the eye, lutein is predominant in the periphery of the retina while the concentration of zeaxanthin is greatest in the very center. This is where conditions most favor the formation of free radicals.
In addition to lutein and zeaxanthin, our "VisionX" contains these three important nutritional aids to eye health: bilberry extract, vitamin C, and zinc. The bilberry fruit is rich in antioxidant anthocyanosides and has been shown to help retain healthy capillaries, including those in the eye.*
B Complex Vitamins and Betaine (TMG)
Our basic muti-antioxidant supplement contains carefully proportioned B-complex vitamins, which are fundamental to energy production, metabolism, growth, and maintenance of normal homocysteine levels, provided they are normal to begin with.*
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control has stated, “All women of childbearing age in the United States who are capable of becoming pregnant should consume at least 400 μg of folic acid per day for the purpose of reducing their risk of having a pregnancy affected with spina bifida or other neural tube defects.” It is not uncommon for doctors to recommend patients to take even higher doses, on the order of 1000 micrograms per day; the standard dose found in prenatal vitamins. One daily dose of our basic multi-antioxidant supplement contains 1,000 μg (micrograms) of folic acid.*
Vitamin B12 is necessary for the health of nerve cells; red blood cells; and DNA, the genetic material in all cells. It has been generally accepted that older adults are at greater risk of developing a vitamin B12 deficiency than younger adults. However, new research suggests that the prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiency in young adults may be greater than previously thought, and those who do not take a supplement containing vitamin B12 are twice as likely to be vitamin B12 deficient as supplement users, regardless of age group. Our basic essential multi-antioxidant supplies advanced levels of vitamin B12 at 200 μg in one daily dose.*
Studies have shown how B-complex vitamins, particularly folic acid, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 help maintain healthy homocysteine levels (provided they were normal to begin with) by facilitating the conversion of homocysteine into the safe amino acid, cysteine. This leaves less homocysteine to oxidize and "nick" the arterial endothelial lining and oxidize LDL cholesterol.* Another safe and effective natural substance known as betaine, or tri-methly-glycine (TMG) also helps maintain healhty homocysteine levels, as long as they were healhty to begin with.* Healthy homocysteine levels are associated with healthy hearts and arteries.* Betaine, or tri-methyl-glycine (TMG), “back-converts” homocysteine into the safe amino acid, methionine.
Betaine, also supports healthy liver function by donating methyl groups necessary for detoxification reactions. Betaine also helps to maintain cell volume and fluid balance, further protecting liver cells from environmental stress.*
Various antioxidants work synergistically, each contributing to the fight against free radicals in different areas and in different ways. In the blood stream, water-soluble antioxidants, such as vitamin C, and grape seed extract come in contact with and neutralize free radicals before they damage LDL-cholesterol. Other antioxidants saturate arterial walls and other deeper tissues, and protect collagen and elastin fibers in the arteries and skin from free radical damage, oxidative damage. Fat-soluble antioxidants, vitamin E, beta carotene, and co-enzyme Q10 ride in the blood fat (triglycerides) and LDL cholesterol, protecting them and the lining of the arteries from oxidation. Vitamin E embeds itself within the surface of LDL cholesterol, protecting it from free radical damage. They each have a place, working together to protect your body. It is not wise to only consume one, two, or even just three specific antioxidant vitamins or minreals, but to take a full range of supplements for maximum synergistic benefits.
In 1928, Albert Szent-Györgyi isolated a chemical that protected fruits against discoloration and infection when bruised. In 1937 he won a Nobel Prize for his discovery—the chemical substance we now know as vitamin C.
Vitamin C plays many important roles in the body, and because human bodies are incapable of manufacturing vitamin C, we must rely on our diet to satisfy our daily requirement. The amount of vitamin C needed daily for optimal performance is directly related to individual ingestion, absorption, utilization, metabolism, excretion, work environment, and physical, mental, and environmental stress. Everyone has a different biochemistry and unique lifestyles. While vitamin C deficiency is rare today, we may still not receive sufficient amounts for our individual health needs. Our unique and patented formulation provides optimal vitamin C protection with a unique blend of mineral ascorbates that provides higher levels of vitamin C in the blood than from equal amounts of ascorbic acid.*
Critical to good health, vitamin C supports many important functions in the body. First, it is essential for collagen synthesis. Collagen is the most abundant structural protein in the body and is essential for staying healthy and strengthening muscles, teeth, bones, skin, and blood vessels. Without adequate vitamin C, there is inadequate collagen.*
Under normal conditions, the RDA of 75–90 mg per day meets the requirement for maintaining collagen. However, we also need vitamin C to quench free radicals, prevent lipid oxidation, and regenerate other antioxidants. It is a co-factor or co-substrate for many enzyme systems involved in such functions as ATP synthesis within mitochondria and hormone biosynthesis. Vitamin C can help retain cardiovascular health by supporting healthy adrenal function and healthy arterial wall integrity (strength and tone). Vitamin C has been shown to reduce and help maintain healthy CRP (C reactive protein) levels, and reduce cytokine activity.
Vitamin C helps support a healthy immune system, which is responsible for defending your body against millions of bacteria, microbes, viruses, toxins, and parasites every day. You also need enough vitamin C to protect the liver from environmental toxins and drug metabolites and to make carnitine, interferon, and prostaglandin E1. Thus, a daily dose of 75–90 mg is unlikely to be sufficient for everyone. Just one tablet of our unique vitmain C provides 600 mg of vitamin C protection,* and this is in addition to our basic essential muilti-vitamin and mineral complex that we recommend, that by itself provides a daily dose of 1300 mg of vitamin C.
Exclusive to our company, our patented vitamin C complex (Poly C) is a balanced formulation of mineral ascorbates with vitamin C activity. By using a variety of ascorbates, our product is able to affect the way the body maintains vitamin C levels. An in-house clinical trial showed that when equal amounts of vitamin C were provided as either our vitamin C product or ascorbic acid (regular vitamin C), our Poly C produced higher levels of vitamin C in blood serum and maintained those higher levels for a longer time.*
Vitamin D has long provided significant support for healthy bone density. However, scientists have validated the critical role that vitamin D plays in regulating healthy cell division and differentiation, and has profound effects on the immune system.* These findings link a deficiency of vitamin D to a host of common age-related problems. As a result of this research and startling evidence of a widespread vitamin D deficiency, prominent nutritional scientists are calling on Americans to increase their vitamin D intake. The current RDA is only 400 IU. In our basic essential multi-antioxidant supplement there is a daily total of 400 IU; however, since we also recommend taking the fish oil (BiOmega-3) and calcium-magnesium supplements (Active Calcium) which also contain vitamin D, a person may easily boost their intake to 1000 IU per day.*
Vitamin D is synthesized in the body from sunlight, but due to the winter season, weather conditions, and sunscreen the body’s ability to produce optimal vitamin D levels may be inhibited. In fact, it has been proposed that annual fluctuations in vitamin D levels explain the seasonality of influenza. All of these factors point to the value of taking a daily vitamin D supplement to ensure optimal vitamin D intake.
Our supplements provide vitamin D in the form of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), a form of the vitamin that is identical to that derived from sunlight on the skin.
Grape Seed Extract
Plants are living pharmacies, producing thousands of substances that are beneficial to human health. There are several major categories of these phytonutrients, including the plant pigments called bioflavonoids. While clearly exhibiting antioxidant capabilities that offer protection from oxidative stress, bioflavonoids are probably even more important for their ability to modulate cell signaling pathways. Among the many important cell-signaling functions that bioflavonoids influence are regulating the cell cycle, decreasing cytokines, inhibiting cell proliferation and producing detoxification enzymes, reduces oxidative stress, and modulates gene expression to help maintain optimal health.
Proanthocyanidins are a subclass of bioflavonoids found in blue and purple berries, purple grapes, and red wine, and are available in relatively high concentrations in grape seed extract. Research suggests a strong role for dietary bioflavonoids, including the proanthocyanidins, in supporting and maintaining sound cardiovascular function. Epidemiological evidence of this connection begins with the observation that relatively low rates of heart disease exist in France, despite a diet high in saturated fat. This apparent “French paradox” has been attributed to the proanthocyanidins in the red wine consumed with most meals. Human clinical research has also shown that proanthocyanidins in red wine maintain healthy endothelial function (cells that line the arteries).*
Proanthocyanidins have been studied extensively in Europe and in the United States. Scientifically observed and documented benefits include the following:
Helps protect plasma LDL from oxidation*
Helps retain healthy capillary strength and vascular function*
Supports healthy immune function*
Supports healthy peripheral circulation*
With our company's unique bioflavonoid supplements combine the highest quality grape-seed extract with the free-radical quenching power of our exclusive formulation of vitamin C ascorbates, giving you an important tool in the quest for lifelong good health.* Laboratory studies done in house confirm that, when used together, these ingredients provide significantly better protection against the oxidative modification of low density lipoproteins (LDL) than would be predicted from the sum of their individual effects. Not only do proanthocyanidins neutralize free radicals, they also conserve and regenerate vitamins C and E.
The energy that every cell needs to function is produced through a complex process in the mitochondria, organelles within the cell. Within the mitochondria, cells store energy in a molecule called adenosine-5-triphosphate, or ATP, which is synthesized and used by every cell in the body. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is an essential part of the electron transport chain the mitochondria use to make ATP. Our unique CoQ10 supplement was developed to deliver high quality, highly bioavailable CoQ10 to the cells to support the production of ATP.*
All cells require energy, which in turn requires CoQ10. Cells with the highest energy demands, such as in the heart, brain, liver, and muscles (particularly those of athletes) have and consume the highest levels of CoQ10. Several human clinical trials demonstrate CoQ10’s effectiveness in maintenance of good heart function.*
A byproduct of energy production in the mitochondria is the formation of damaging (oxidizing) free radicals. Nature has designed a molecule in CoQ10 that is remarkable because it not only assists in ATP production, it also works in concert with other antioxidants to clean up the free radicals that are produced during that process and protect, against their damaging effects. As an antioxidant, CoQ10 rivals vitamins E and C in maintaining good health.* In addition, CoQ10 helps to regenerate and recycle vitamin E.*
As we age, the ability to absorb and synthesize CoQ10 diminishes and the amount of CoQ10 retained in tissues decreases. In addition, CoQ10 may be depleted by several other factors, including overall nutritional status, specific medications, and inadequate levels of the B vitamins, vitamin C, and selenium. Excessive exercise or environmental stresses such as illness and extreme weather may also lower CoQ10 levels in tissue.*
Our unique, highly absorbable CoQ10 supplement contains a full 30 mg of CoQ10 and 12.5 mg of alpha lipoic acid per soft gel capsule. This unique formulation provides these important antioxidants in a natural mixture of lecithin and vegetable-derived glycerin monooleate in a base of medium chain triglycerides. Clinical tests performed in our in-house laboratories show that our unique CoQ10 gel capsules delivers CoQ10 in much higher quantities than from solid formulations or from competitive liquid formulations, making our product more bioavailable (and a better value) than other CoQ10 products.*
Alpha Lipoic Acid
Alpha lipoic acid is another component involved in mitochondrial energy metabolism and recycling oxidized CoQ10. This system also helps to regenerate and recycle other antioxidants, including vitamins E and C and glutathione. Alpha lipoic acid is easily transported across cell membranes to provide support to the important enzymes both inside and outside the cell. Because it is both water and oil-soluble, it is thought to help regenerate both water and oil-soluble antioxidants.*
Alpha-lipoic acid protects against oxidative damage to LDL cholesterol and to the endothelial cells (lining) of the arteries.* Alpha-lipoic acid along with magnesium are able to assist in maintaining healthy blood vessels and pressures, as long as they are healthy to begin with.* This bio-chemical process occurs via raising levels of glutathione to protect bio-mechanisms that regulate arterial tone.
The combination of alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), vitamin E, grape seed extract, olive extract, green tea extract, quercetin, and Co-Q10 synergistically work together in the reduction of oxidation to LDL cholesterol and the arterial lining much better than any single antioxidant working alone.*
Countries in which people consume the highest amount of olive oil have the best overall heart and immunological health. Olive oil consumption is one of the important factors behind the health benefits of the “Mediterranean Diet.” Researchers have discovered that there are up to 300 times more polyphenol compounds in olive water compared to olive oil. Olive polyphenols have been the subject of numerous in vitro, in vivo, and human studies pointing toward their benefits in many different areas, including protecting against LDL oxidation, suppressing free radicals, and stabilizing cell membranes. We have a patented process for extracting the "heart of the olive" that provides highly bioavailable phenolic antioxidants. A daily dose (30 mg) of our basic essential multi-antioxidant supplement is equivalent to drinking more than two ounces of extra virgin olive oil a day. Furthermore, in our "liver maintenance" product, there is a daily dose of 45 mg, in addition to many other synergistic nutrients to provide antioxidant health, such as inhibition of LDL cholesterol and DNA oxidation.*
Turmeric Extract (a.k.a. Curcumin)
Turmeric, the powdered root of the plant Curcuma longa L., is a member of the ginger family native to India and Southeast Asia. It contains curcumin and related compounds known as curcuminoids, which have significant antioxidant properties.*
The extract from the common spice turmeric has remarkable qualities as an antioxidant. Over time, as our cells continue to be affected by free radicals, organs begin to degenerate and aging accelerates. The body has built-in defense mechanisms to protect itself from free radical damage, but eventually, aging depletes the body’s ability to repair and maintain itself at a youthful condition.
Studies have tied common biochemical reactions, particularly those involving cytokine and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kappaB) activity, that damage arterial walls, cell membranes within all organs, including the cartilage within our joints. NF-kappaB acts like a switch to turn on genes that produce the body’s biochecmical reaction that causes this damage, with noticeable results. Because NF-kappaB‘s expression increases with aging, scientists have sought ways to modulate NF-kappaB and its effects in the body. Turmeric extract (curcumin) has been shown to exert powerful inhibitory effects on NF-kappaB activation and cytokine activity within the body, which in turn has been shown to help maintain healthy cells and organs.* In other words, turmeric extract (curcumin) inhibits overexpression of NF-kappaB and cytokine activity with noticeable results!* This is one of the main reasons this nutrient is found in several of our products: our main multi-antioxidant (MegaAntioxidant), liver maintenance product (Hepasil DTX) and our joint health product, Procosa II, and our basic essential product for teens, "Body Rox." It is also a one of the ingredients found in the "Antioxidant Booster" in the Health Pak 100, along with grape seed extract, resveratrol, and isoflavones, etc.
Other clinical trials suggest roles for turmeric extract in helping maintain healthy lipid profiles (provided that they were healthy to begin with), bowel, and joint functions.* Turmeric extract can also help maintain normal healthy platelet function.* Turmeric extract may effectively rescue pancreatic islets from damage, the cause of deficient insulin production, without affecting the normal function of these cellular structures.*
Turmeric extract's numerous effects include protecting against estrogen-mimicking chemicals, protecting against damaging free radicals, promoting normal cell cycle growth, and helping to maintain a healthy immune system.*
Green Tea Extract
Over the past several decades epidemiological studies have revealed that people who consume green tea have overall better health than those who do not consume this substance.* Over the past 15 years, an enormous volume of positive studies has been published about the health benefits of green tea. Scientists have looked at the active “polyphenol” constituents of green tea and have found that they possess remarkable biological activities that include inhibiting LDL cholesterol, endothelium, and neuronal oxidation, while maintaining healthy DNA structure. Green tea extract also helps maintain healthy liver function and a health immune system.* We have a few products that contain decaffeinated green tea extract that is standardized to provide 98% of the active polyphenols that scientists attribute to green tea’s multiple health benefits. In our "Heapsil DTX" product, green tea polyphenols (including EGCG) is combined with olive extract, tumeric extract (curcumin), alpha lipoic acid, broccoli extract, n-acetyl-cysteine, betaine and other nutrients, for synergisic benefits.*
Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Fish Oil, Flax Seed Oil)
No nutritional program is complete without a high-quality source of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids, which are lacking in the typical Western diet. Our unique potent and pure supplement is produced from cold-water, deep-sea fish oil and contains a balanced, concentrated daily dose of two important omega-3 fatty acids: eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA) in two convenient capsules per day.
HEALTHY FATS: Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are the bio-synthetic precursors of a family of compounds called eicosanoids (prostaglandins, thromboxanes, and leukotrienes). These compounds are hormone-like substances that help retain normal health processes in our bodies. It is important to maintain an appropriate balance of omega-3 and omega-6 in the diet as these two substances work together to promote health. Yet despite the clear health benefits associated with omega-3 fatty acids, dietary surveys indicate that most of us do not obtain enough omega-3 fatty acids from our diets.*
In 2002, the American Heart Association issued new guidance on fish and fish oil consumption due to the results of large-scale epidemiological studies and randomized controlled studies that showed omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil support cardiovascular health. In addition to the heart health benefits, studies have shown omega-3 fatty acids, in the form of fish oil supplements, to be effective in supporting healthy joints, promoting optimal neural development and function in the unborn and in children, and maintaining good bone health. Finally, DHA is also an important structural component of the retina and is, therefore, essential for eye development and growth.*
EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT: It is important that women of child-bearing age who are pregnant or may become pregnant get proper nutrition to ensure the best possible development for their baby, including getting sufficient amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. DHA is one of the dominant fats in the nerve cells of fetal and infant brains, and research shows that omega-3 fatty acids are critical to the development of the brain before birth and during early childhood. Many commercially-prepared infant formulas are now fortified with DHA to support health and nervous system development.*
VITAMIN D: Most purification processes for fish oil remove any vitamin D from their product. Yet, experts now widely believe that a majority of people are not getting enough vitamin D, which has been shown to have many health benefits, such as supporting bone health, healthy lung and immunological function.* Our fish oil supplement, BiOmega-3 is fortified with vitamin D3 to supply an additional 200 IU per day.*
WHY NOT JUST EAT FISH? In spite of clear benefits of including fish in the diet, health authorities have warned us to limit our intake of certain species of fish due to concern about potential contaminants (particularly mercury), especially during pregnancy. Manufactured in a state-of-the art facility, our fish oil supplement, BiOmega-3 is virtually free of contaminants, which are eliminated through a double-molecular distillation process that ensures the highest possible purity. Through this process, heavy metals, PCBs, pesticides, and organic residues are effectively eliminated. Also free of trans-fatty acids, each capsule contains 2 mg of mixed natural tocopherols to minimize oxidation of the omega-3 fatty acids and maintain product quality during storage.
In short, our unique fish oil supplement is one of the purest, highest quality fish oil products available on the market today. Supplementation with our fish oil supplement is an excellent way to ensure that your diet includes a concentrated balance of safe, healthful EPA and DHA in two convenient capsules per day. And with added lemon flavoring, there is no fishy after-taste.
Minerals in The Chelated Form
Minerals and trace elements represent less than one-half of one percent of the total nutrients we consume every day. Yet without them our bodies would be unable to efficiently use the carbohydrates, proteins, and fats in our diet. Many vitamins and enzymes need a mineral co-factor to function properly. Our chelated mineral supplement is a carefully formulated balance of essential minerals and ultra trace minerals sourced from the highest quality suppliers in forms readily absorbed by the body.* The following is not meant to be inclusive, or to include all the benefits that may be associated with a particular mineral. This is only a sampling of a few of the minerals and a few of their many roles they play in the body.
A component of hundreds of enzymes, zinc is involved in carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism, as well as DNA and RNA replication. Zinc functions as an antioxidant, aids in retaining healthy bone structure development, healthy immune function, and healthy vision, and supports normal fetal growth.*
Selenium is an essential component of the glutathione peroxidase antioxidant system, which helps combat the effects of free radicals and plays an important role in thyroid hormone metabolism. Selenium has also been shown to help support a healthy immune system. In addition, many studies have shown that selenium is important for retaining prostate health.*
Throughout life, bones are in a constant state of reformation as calcium is continually removed from and re-deposited in the bones. Adequate levels of calcium are needed every day to ensure that bone mineral density is maintained. If people do not get enough calcium from their diets, the body will take it from bone structure, which results in a net loss of bone calcium.
Deficiencies of calcium, magnesium, boron, and vitamin D can contribute to significant bone loss, thinning of the bones that makes them prone to fracture. Although signs of bone loss usually do not occur until the later years of life, getting the proper amount of calcium in our diet when we’re young helps build strong bones and reduces the risk of significant bone loss in the future, as long as dietary intake continues to be adequate. Adolescents who make even a 5 percent gain in bone mass in their teens significantly help maintain healthy bones throughout their life.
In addition to maintaining healthy bones, calcium is critical to normal nerve conduction, muscle contraction, blood clotting (provided it is normal to begin with), cell division, and electrical conduction in the heart. It is also essential for producing and activating enzymes and hormones that regulate digestion, energy, and fat metabolism.*
Magnesium is essential for the formation and maintenance of healthy bones and teeth, which is where 70 percent of the body’s magnesium is found. It is involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates and amino acids and plays an important role in neuromuscular contractions. It is also an activator of hundreds of enzymes essential to life.* Magnesium is used in the creation of ATP, the energy molecules that powers the heart, muslces, and everything else in the body. Without adequate levels of magnesium and ATP fatigue may result. Magnesium aids in carbohydrate metabolism.
Calcium allows for muscle contraction, magnesium allows for muscle relaxation, including relaxation of the smooth muscles of the arterial walls, one of the many factors in regulating blood pressure. Magnesium deficiencies may affect the rhythm and contractions of the heart.* Magnesium and calciium, along with vitamin D and vitamin K are critical in mineralization and strength of the bone. Deficiencies may lead to bone loss.*
Due to poor eating habits, and the critical need for this all important mineral, many nutritional and governmental agencies agree upon recommended daily intake levels for magnesium. For adults the ranges vary between men and women, with the average being around 200 mg or more per day.* Our basic Chelated Minerals supplement provides a daily dose of 200 mg of magnesium. To boost one's intake we have an additional calcium-magnesium-vitamin D supplement, Active Calcium and Body Rox Calcium.
Today’s poor diets and unhealthy lifestyles often put stress on the body’s blood glucose control mechanisms. Chromium is an important component of the glucose tolerance factor (GTF), which helps retain healthy glucose metabolism, provided it is healthy to begin with. Healthy insulin and glucose levels are beneficial for weight management and sustained energy levels throughout the day.*
Iodine is a crucial component in the production of thyroid hormones, which regulate metabolism, growth, reproduction, and the synthesis of protein. Supplemental iodine is especially important for people on a vegetarian diet, those who avoid seafood, or those who must restrict their salt intake.*
Copper is a critical component of the enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD), an important antioxidant in cell cytoplasm, and acts as a catalyst in the formation of hemoglobin. Copper is also essential for collagen synthesis.*
Manganese is an important co-factor in the production of glycosaminoglycans, compounds that make up connective tissues, bones, arteries, and other organs. Manganese is an activator of numerous enzymes, and supplementation with manganese can enhance the SOD enzyme system to increase antioxidant activity.*
Vanadium helps support healthy serum glucose levels, provided they are healthy to begin with, and may also help retain healthy thyroid function.*
